Dr. Jae Hyun Park Appointed President of The American Board of Orthodontics

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) appointed Jae Hyun Park, D.M.D., M.S.D., M.S., Ph.D., of Phoenix, Ariz., as president for the year beginning May 6, 2024.

The other 2024-2025 officers of the ABO are Roberto Hernández Orsini, D.M.D., M.P.H., M.S., of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, president-elect; P. Emile Rossouw, M.Ch.D., Ph.D., of Rochester, N.Y., secretary-treasurer; and Timothy S. Trulove, D.M.D., M.S., of Montgomery, Ala., immediate past president.

The ABO directors are responsible for establishing policy concerning the board certification of specialists in orthodontics. Each ABO director represents one of the eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves an eight-year term, which culminates in the position of president. During his tenure as an ABO director, Dr. Park has represented the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO). As ABO president, he also serves as chair of the ABO Finance and Executive committees and as the ABO liaison to numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the College of Diplomates of the ABO, the Graduate Orthodontic Resident Program (GORP), the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) and the Society of Educators (SOE).

Dr. Park is professor and chair of the postgraduate orthodontic program at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health in Mesa, Ariz., a position he has held since 2008. Prior to coming to the United States, he practiced orthodontics in South Korea for 10 years and served as a clinical assistant professor at Kyung Hee University.

Certified by the ABO in 2007, Dr. Park is past chair of the ABO Written Examination Committee and the ABO Policy Committee. He also serves as an ABO examiner.

Dr. Park serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed orthodontic and dental journals. He is deputy editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) and AJO-DO Clinical Companion. He is associate editor of the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists, Orthodontics & Craniofacial Research, Korean Journal of Orthodontics, Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, and Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is also an editorial board member of The Angle Orthodontist and Seminars in Orthodontics and editor-in-chief emeritus of the Journal of the PCSO (PCSO Bulletin).

He has published more than 390 scientific and clinical articles, including six cover pages in the AJO-DO, three books, and 23 book chapters. He has also provided more than 150 invited CE lectures nationally and internationally.

Dr. Park received his undergraduate education from Seoul National University, graduating with honors. He earned D.M.D., M.S.D., and Ph.D. degrees from the Kyung Hee University School of Dentistry in South Korea. He also completed a master’s degree in public health from Seoul National University.

Dr. Park completed the postgraduate orthodontic program in the United States at the New York University College of Dentistry, earning a master’s degree.

Dr. Park is past president of the Arizona State Orthodontic Association and central body director of the National E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontists representing Angle Northern California. He received the Charley Schultz Award (1st place) in 2006 and the AAO Joseph E. Johnson Clinical Award (1st place) in 2011 from the AAO. His Case of the Month article in the AJO-DO was selected to receive the 2021 Case Report of the Year Award from the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (CDABO). Recently, he received the 2021 Award of Merit from the PCSO and received the 2023 AAOF Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and Research Award at the 2023 AAO annual session.
